Ideas pushed to become realities – p4, p5

Sports hub plan gains momentum BY GRACE CABELL Plans to have a sports hub in Upper Riccarton are accelerating. FC Twenty 11 Football Club boss Eddie Cropley is behind the move to pool sports club resources in the area. The three sports clubs involved are the Riccarton Domain Tennis Club, Riccarton Cricket Club and the FC Twenty 11 Football Club. The facility would be based at the

Upper Riccarton Domain. The group recently received support from the Riccarton-Wigram Community Board to go ahead with plans for the sports hub. Mr Cropley said the group was working on a final plan to present to the board. Board member Peter Laloli said the idea was in its early stages but the board was in support of the idea. The Riccarton Cricket Club is currently situated at the Hagley

Oval, where it has been for nearly 100 years. Cricket club treasurer Tim Murdoch said there was no future for the club at the Hagley Oval. “We will definitely be moving. We still have a clubrooms there but the last couple of years we’ve planned a lot of cricket at the Upper Riccarton Domain,” said Mr Murdoch. One of the options for the new hub is having two cricket nets

instead of one. The proposed hub would also include a clubroom for the three clubs to use. “We’ve had a good reception from the other two clubs and there is definitely a common thread of thought in the desire to move forward,” said Mr Murdoch. He said there was a lot of work still to be done but was hopeful they would be able to move forward. • Nga Puna Wai, page 3

The economic upturn in Hornby is causing one community resource to struggle. Many of the members of the volunteer-run Hornby Toy Library were lower-income See families. Inside: Many have moved away from the area since the earthquakes, due to rising rental prices. Toy library chairwoman Amanda Cosgrove said the library was struggling to find both members and volunteers. “We’ve lost some of our biggest market, so we’re down to about 50 families regularly using the library. We do go through cycles as the children in some families outgrow the toys, and others come through, so it does come in waves. But we’d usually have at least 75 families.” However, she said the families signing up with the library were becoming more diverse. Some of the families who recently joined had children with special needs, while others were new immigrants. There are currently six volunteers on the committee, and they manage a library of about 800 toys. Two of the committee members are due to step down soon, so help is needed to manage paperwork like accounts, minutes and funding applications, and to manage the practical side of running and cataloging the library. 384 0600

Mother wins intersection battle

Principal jumps ship

BY GABRIELLE STUART

After 19 years at Riccarton High School, Phil Holstein is stepping into a new role as the principal of Burnside High School. With 2600 students, the school is one of the largest secondary schools in New Zealand. Mr Holstein will take up his position in term one 2015.

Views on sports hub sought At Thursday’s meeting it was decided that public consultation would be carried out from October 10, or earlier if possible, and run for two months. Several city councillors were eager to hold hearings before the Christmas and New Year break so as not to delay the process any further. City councillor Yani Johanson

said the longer it took for a decision to be made, the more time would be lost for sporting bodies needing to make funding applications. Public consultation must run for two months, under the Reserves Act and hearings would be held at the conclusion of this period. After the hearings, all submissions will still need to be analysed

Watch Repairs

Amanda Wallis has won a victory in her battle to make an Addington intersection safer. The mother-of-four has campaigned since April this year to have the intersection of Brougham and Selwyn streets made safer. She organised a petition and several workshops over the issue, as well as a protest this month, which was cancelled because of rain. This month the New Zealand Transport Agency has agreed to make changes to the intersection. A new, two-phase pedestrian crossing will be installed, with a protected pedestrian island in the middle of the highway. A right-turning arrow will also be installed for vehicles turning into Selwyn St. The changes were made public after Wigram MP Megan Woods met with the NZTA to ask it what was happening with the intersection. “Amanda has put so much energy and so much passion into this issue, and I would like to see staff at NZTA sit down and make an effort to communicate with the community.” NZTA traffic and safety manager Tony Spowart was open to the idea.

Awesome ideas pushed to Ministry of Awesome founder Kaila Colbin was once a top amateur boxer in New York City. Now, she fights for people with entrepreneurial dreams in Christchurch. Max Towle talked to her about Coffee and Jam, cooking school, and street smarts. Hi Kaila, I can immediately tell you’re from the US from your accent. That’s right, I was born and bred in New York City.

What’s life like there? It’s a little bit like the movies to be honest. There’s always something amazing going on and the kids are all doing ridiculous

capable. I had done a whole heap of things before that in the US. My degree was in hotel and restaurant administration. I’ve worked in visual printing, in the wholesale jewellery industry . . . I guess I would call myself a serial entrepreneur. Then I worked in graphic design and for a PR company. I also work for TEDxChristchurch, which is a programme of local events that bring people together to spread ideas. We’ve had events where inspirational speakers speak on a whole heap of subjects. How was the Ministry of Awesome founded? In early 2012, myself and a few like-minded people decided that the city needed support for all the people who were trying, and maybe struggling, to do awesome things. At our first meeting, which was just me, Vicki Buck, Sam Johnson, and (former Ngai Tahu strategy manager) Sacha McMeeking, we just had a coffee at the Addington Coffee Co-op and signed a mock constitution. In our early days, we would just have dinner with someone rather than having a meeting in an office or something. What is the Ministry of Awesome? We try and open doors for people and help them make connections with key people in the city. We run around 70 events each year and have lots of people come along to our meetings. We have

things. I thought it was a great place to grow up. I thought I was street smart growing up, but honestly, when I first came to New Zealand about 10 years ago I had trouble with the simple things like hanging up a clothes line or lighting a fire. I couldn’t tell the difference between a sheep and a goat. A friend once said my intelligence goes down with population density when I move around. Why come to New Zealand? It was a boy who brought me here, actually. Are you still together? We’re not together anymore but we are still friends and I am eternally grateful to him for bringing me to this country. Did you have any plans when you came? I literally had no idea what I was going to do when I first came here. I don’t have a simple job title like an accountant or lawyer so I had trouble finding work as someone who was broadly

hundreds of one-on-ones with people to offer them support. We basically want to push people in Christchurch who are entrepreneurial. People shouldn’t think they’re crazy just because they have a crazy idea. What we might see is a computer programmer turn up at one of our meetings and say they want to get involved in a project, then someone else might say: “Hey, I’m looking for a computer programmer.” We try and foster those serendipitous moments. Pick one recent success that the ministry has had? Just recently, we gave a hand to Amy Burke who’s running the Help for the Homeless campaign in Christchurch. We saw what she was doing and called her up and asked if she wanted help running her meetings and putting a structure in place for her organisation. We let them use our office space. We’re helping them get set up as an official organisation. These may seem like small things, but sometimes people don’t know how to do them. There are people trying to do incredible things, but they may have small barriers that stop them from doing what they want to do. How is it funded? The Ministry of Awesome has been incredibly lucky to get so much funding. The Canterbury Community Trust has backed us since our beginning. Kiwibank has been a great funder, and so has the city council.

Middleton Grange students’ new business project BY GRACE CABELL Students at Middleton Grange School are getting business-savvy with a new project for the Young Enterprise Scheme. Last week, the five year 12 pupils launched their business idea at Luciano Espresso Bar on Moorhouse Ave. Their idea was to cut the bottoms of recycled wine bottles into multipurpose eco-friendly holders. The holders have been decorated by Middleton Grange art students to attract cafe owners to purchase them for cafe tables. Students Ruth McKie, Rebekah Miguel, Joseph Spoelstra, Gear Thannipat and Sam Lees have worked togethor to create the eco-freindly carriers as part of their NCEA assessment in business studies. Middleton Grange curriculum leader of commerce, Peter An-

derson, said the project has been very technical and the young pupils had put in a lot of effort. “They’ve contracted out a lot of the work. They borrowed a grinder from the class teacher, but they broke it and have to replace it, so that was an unexpected cost,” he said. The project, SiO2, is the chemical formula for glass. Once the group has been through two trading cycles, they will look at ways to push sales further. “Some have already sold at the young enterprise tradefair at the Re:Start Mall and have sold some to individual people. They’re targeting for the use in cafes, or even just as an ornament,” said Mr Anderson. You can see the different patterns available at their Facebook page: www.facebook.com/Glasscutcreations.

called him from the white pages, first spoke to his wife on the phone, then convinced him to come here. How would you like to see the future of the city develop? My hope for Christchurch is that we realise the promise that emerged from the rubble. I don’t think that’s a promise of shiny new buildings, but of people who are creative, active, engaged, quirky, interesting, and diverse. We need that kind of reputation as a city. If someone is cutting edge, Christchurch should be the kind of place that welcomes them. Do you often travel back to the US? I do. I’m on the board of the cooking school my mother founded in New York. It’s the oldest natural foods cooking school in the US. It’s called the Natural Gourmet Institute and we have an accredited professional chef training programme. My family is back in the States which is another reason why I go back and forth so frequently. Are you a great cook? Actually, no, not really. I’m usually surrounded by so many people who are fantastic in the kitchen. I’m more of an “eatie,” than a “cookie.” What are your hobbies? I am a rock climber and a boxer. I used to be quite a serious boxer in around the year 2000. I had about eight fights and I was ranked second in the US in my category as an amateur. I also try to explore more of the South Island when I can.

Look and feel fabulous W hen owner Charleen Carstairs opened the doors of Magnifique Hair and Beauty just five years ago, she thought it would be a one-woman operation. Now with a staff of seven, the salon has gone from strength to strength and is fast building a reputation as a one-stop beauty and hair shop. Already well known for the full range of hairdressing services available, the additional beauty therapy options are proving to be just as popular. Their current specials include an eye trio enabling lucky customers to receive a brow shape, brow tint and lash tint for only $25. You can also choose from a full set of acrylic nails at $35 or gel nails for $30. And if that wasn’t enough, semi-permanent lash extensions from Lashform are only $65. This modern, trendy salon specialises in hair extensions, giving a beautiful full head of long hair in hours instead of months. The extensions can be cut, coloured and styled just like your own hair. And if thinning hair is a problem for both women and men, they stock and use Nioxin. The customised range of hair and scalp products is proven to deliver noticeably

thicker, denser-looking hair. Charleen believes in keeping herself and her team as up-to-date as possible with new techniques, trends and fashions to provide the best service to her customers. She is passionate about education in the industry as it is constantly changing, and she makes sure that however experienced the stylist is, they will always have the chance to keep learning their trade. The enthusiasm for keeping current extends to the products they use. A Schwarzkopf salon, they now use Schwarzkopf Essensity, the first permanent ammonia-free colour with phytolipid technology which delivers real colour results, natural intensity and pure softness while using natural ingredients where possible. The years of experience combined with the latest products and techniques means that if you are looking for a trim, a complicated hair up, a new colour or a complete makeover, the staff at Magnifique Hair and Beauty will be able to meet your needs. A community board member has described the plight of people with disabilities trying to park in the south of the city as “hilarious”. “If you didn’t laugh you’d cry,” said Spreydon-Heathcote Community Board member Karolin Potter. Over the past three weeks, she and fellow community board member Helene Mautner have visited every cluster of shops in the ward, looking at the disability parking spaces. They found problems at more than 20 centres and shopping areas, including Barrington, Addington and Colombo St. Problems include parks which are too narrow for a driver with a disability to get out of their vehicle, high curbs with no ramp access for wheelchairs, and ramps which are too steep. They were particularly concerned about parking at Pioneer Recreation and Sport Centre, where there are two disabled car parks near the back entrance, and three at the front. The parks at the back are close to an entrance, but Ms Potter said the parks at the front were more than 100m away. “Pioneer was most upsetting, because it just seemed like the parks were a complete afterthought.” There are fifteen staff car parks which are closer to the centre

PROBLEM: Spreydon-Heathcote Community Board members Helene Mautner (left), and Karolin Potter are concerned that mobility parking spaces at Pioneer Recreation and Sport Centre are too far away from the entrance. PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN than the front entrance disability parks, as well as designated bike and bus parking. City council recreation and sports unit manager John Filsell said there had been no written complaints about the location of the parks over the past year, although there had been complaints about people parking in them without permits. He said options for relocating or adding more parks had been reviewed since the issue was raised by the community board. “We have yet not been able to

identify any practical solutions that would allow us to relocate the northern car parks closer to the entrance without significantly impacting traffic flows and facility operation.” But he said that locations for extra parks near the south entrance were being looked at. Dr Mautner said she was disappointed by the number of problems they found across the ward. “Even one bad car park is a disappointment. For people with disabilities, not being able

to travel around freely has a real impact on their lives.” Ms Potter said it made a simple trip to the shops an ordeal. “We met a women at the Centaurus Rd shops who said she had to back onto the pavement from the disabled car parks, because it was too frightening to go up on her wheelchair frontways. It was too steep and she was afraid she’d tip right over.” CCS Disability Action mobility parking and access adviser BJ Clark said there were similar problems across the city. “I applaud the community board for highlighting this issue because it’s one where we get a lot of complaints. We have tried media campaigns and we have tried working with the malls to find ways to monitor them, but it continues to be a huge issue. “Some people have no thought for their fellow man, and they don’t understand what it’s like to be a person with a disability.” He said the design of the parks was important. “Having kerb access is just as important as having the marked space.” The community board has asked for a city council report on car parks to be compiled, with options for fixing the problems. Once the report is finished, they plan to present it to the city council.

Somerfield resident Gordon McKay regularly spends 40 hours working as a coastguard volunteer, on top of his full-time job. Last week he had his hard work recognised, being named Coastguard Canterbury Air Patrol Volunteer of the Year. “If you do it for the love you don’t mind it,” Mr McKay said. He has been involved in coastguard work since he was a teenager. He learnt to fly through the British Royal Air Force, and worked for many years on professional rescue ships in the seas around Europe. He said there was a lot of communication involved in a rescue operation. “On the sea you are focused on what is around you, and everything’s chugging along at a rate of a few knots. Fat Freeze machine gets results! The cryolipolysis (Fat Freeze) machine is so effective – you will be amazed by the results.

H

ow does the treatment work? With our treatment, we use a specially designed vacuum to gently draw up the skin area; the automated cooling handles then starts the treatment, which can be programmable, including treatment time. The great thing about this treatment, apart from that it’s simple and really effective, is that it’s designed to be a ‘lunchtime job’, where clients can return to normal activities right afterwards without discomfort and the only tell-tale signs being a flushed skin appearance (on the treated area) for a few hours.

Q&A

WOW!

50% off first treatment

Research from the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery suggests a loss of 20 to 40 per cent for each treatment (where 20 per cent is the average). After a two-month wait, when you are ready for the next treatment, you can look forward to another 20 per cent and even more being lost. Sometimes one treatment is enough. The technology of using cold to decompose fat cells was pioneered by the president of the Pennsylvania University School of Medicine in America and has since gained FDA approval as well as European CE. Unlike other slimming technologies out there, this one is designed as an alternative to liposuction for areas of localised fat, for example, back rolls, muffin tops, love handles.

Can I use this treatment?

Good candidates have bulges in certain areas they want to get rid of. This is not a weight loss solution for people who are obese. The client should always consult with the practioner.

What can I do after the treatment?

Usually we have patients going back to work immediately after the session. Some patients experience redness, tingling or numbness in the treated area, but this is temporary and will resolve completely. For others some bruising and discomfort may occur.

How long until I see results?

Visible changes occur as quickly as three weeks, while the most dramatic results show after two months. The body will continue to flush out fat cells along with its toxins up to four to six months after treatment.

After 60 days, 1 treatment

Are these changes here to stay, or will they disappear? The affected fat cells will be eliminated. As long as you maintain your weight with your normal diet and exercise, your long-term results should remain stable.

After 40 days, 1 treatment

Not suitable for people suffering from obesity, cardiac conditions or diabetes. Find Red Beauty at 336 Bealey Avenue. Phone 366 3414, or visit www.redbeauty.net.nz.

After 75 days, 1 treatment

Self Hypnosis and Neurolinguistic Programming is based on the understanding that we are unique and we have all the resources within us to make the changes in our lives and attitudes. However, sometimes we require someone to work alongside to bring out these strengths. That’s where Rebecca comes in. She has 18 years of experience working in health for the Canterbury District Health Board and National Health Service in England and her passion for hypnosis is founded in her own discovery of how easily and effectively changes can take place when using these approaches. The system she employs is a series of techniques designed to help people get positive and successful results. the years we can develop beliefs and habits that initially serve a purpose but now are unhelpful such as believing will never be able to lose weight, stop smoking, be calm in a plane. Techniques such as goal setting, relaxation and visualisation exercises bring about the change. Rebecca believes that when we know the changes have come from within us, we can have confidence they are sustainable and we are in control. While many of her clients see her individually, she also offers group sessions and is happy to go into workplaces or social groups to talk about what she does. This is a gentle, empowering, pain-free system that lets us make our own changes based on the way we naturally learn and develop habits and is paired with Rebecca’s consistent positive feedback and support. Some clients see a change after just one visit, some after ten or more. It is highly individual, and working with a practitioner like Rebecca will provide support throughout the journey. [Edition datE]

New baby potato and salmon salad Serves 4 Adding the salmon flakes and boiled eggs turns it into a hearty summer meal or great pot luck salad. Ingredients 200g Hot-smoked salmon fillets, flaked 500g New potatoes 4 Eggs, boiled, peeled and quartered 5 sprigs Mint 50g Baby spinach, leaves, about a cup 1 Garlic clove, chopped 1 tsp Lemon, zest ¼ cup Olive oil 2 Tbsp Water, warm 1 Chives, snipped 1 to taste Cracked black pepper Directions Cook potatoes in salted water until just tender when pierced with a knife. Drain and cool enough to handle, cut in half or quarters. In a large bowl, combine potatoes, flaked salmon and quartered eggs. For dressing, combine mint, spinach leaves, garlic and lemon zest in a food processor (or use a jug and a stick blender). Process until fine; add oil and enough warm water to make a thin, pourable dressing. Season to taste. Toss the salad with some or all of the dressing and arrange on a serving platter. Garnish with snipped chives and cracked pepper. Tip: If you have excess dressing, keep in the fridge and use for pasta or as a marinade for chicken or over grilled fish.

HEARTY: Baby potato and salmon salad makes a good pot luck dinner dish. Chargrilled broccolini Serves 4 These beautiful thin-stemmed “mini broccoli’’ are the perfect cook-on-the-barbecue healthy green vegetable. They contain calcium, folate and iron, and are high in vitamin C. Charred, nutty and delicious served with either meat or fish, and the best bit — from fridge to table in less than five minutes, perfect. Ingredients 16 Broccolini, use up to 20 2 Tbsp Olive oil ½ tsp Salt 3 Tbsp Greek yoghurt ¼ tsp Smoked paprika, or chilli flakes Directions Trim broccolini stems to the same length. Toss in a bowl with oil and salt. Cook on a high heat until lightly charred and wilted. Serve garnished with greek yoghurt and sprinkle with smoked paprika or chilli flakes.

Coriander and lime grilled chicken Serves 4 Boneless chicken thighs are ideal for barbecuing as they cook all the way through fast. When cooking any meat it should not be cold straight from the fridge, allow it to stand at room temperature for at least 20 minutes before cooking so it cooks through evenly (not overcooked on the outside while the inside is still cold.) Ingredients 1½ Tbsp Fish sauce, or soy sauce 1½ Tbsp Brown sugar 2 tsp Ginger, finely grated or minced 8 Boneless chicken thighs, skinless (about 800g) Marinade 1 bunch Coriander, washed roots, stems and leaves, chopped 2 cloves Garlic, minced 1 Lime, finely zested ¼ cup Fresh lime juice Directions Blend all marinade ingredients together in a food processor (if you don’t have a food processor, chop the coriander very finely and mix with all other ingredients).

WESTERN NEWS

Combine the chicken with marinade and leave to marinate in the fridge for at least 2 hours, or up to 24 hours. When ready to cook, remove chicken from fridge and stand at room temperature for 20-30 minutes. Cook on a preheated barbecue grill (medium to high heat) for 3-5 minutes on each side or until cooked through. Serve with a salad or slice chicken and toss with cooked vermicelli noodles, chopped fresh mint, shredded carrot, cucumber and a dressing made of fish sauce, lime juice, extra virgin olive oil and a bit of brown sugar. Coconut cashew coffee smoothie This dairy-free afternoon yumminess is surprisingly rich, creamy and satisfying. Adding chia seeds amps up the omega-3 content and gives a silky texture. Serves 1 Ingredients ¼ cup raw cashews ¼ cup desiccated coconut 1 Tbsp chia seeds 1 cup water 1 banana, pre-frozen in pieces (or just a banana) 1 tsp finely ground coffee beans (optional but yum) Directions Place cashews, coconut, chia seeds and water into a blender and run for about 30 seconds. Giving this stage a bit of time allows the water to soak in to the nuts and seeds nicely, making for a creamier end result. Add banana and coffee then blend again until completely smooth.

Help! I’ve got “quake-brain”

– what can I do about it?

S

ince the earthquakes turned our lives upside down, do you have days when everything is in the “too hard” basket? Do you have times when it’s hard to concentrate or prioritise all the things which need to be done and you just can’t seem to think straight however hard you try? Maybe you’ve joked about “quake-brain” or having a “senior moment” when you have struggled to remember something important, or perhaps you just can’t recall the last time you got a good night’s sleep. Earthquakes don’t just damage the built environment; they also tear apart the fabric of everyday life, quite literally turning the world upside down for those affected. Recovery isn’t just about repairing buildings and infrastructure, communities and lives need to be rebuilt too. We know from research that Cantabrians are weary, and that traumatic events like earthquakes - and dealing with their aftermath - take their toll on our minds and our bodies in many ways. New Zealand Red Cross have learned from international experience and created a series of training

Earthquakes don’t just damage the built environment; they also tear apart the fabric of everyday life, quite literally turning the world upside down for those affected. sessions for community groups and workplaces to help us understand the science of stress and give practical tips on how we can support each other through the recovery process. Community sessions are free – all you need to provide is the venue (the workplace sessions are charged at a cost.) So if you would like to learn more about how we respond to stress and how to cope with our natural reaction to an unnatural situation, why not book a free 45-minute training session for your community group? From safes to secure your passports and jewellery, to commercial cash-rated safes, there is a safe for you. Their showroom is full of safes, featuring; Chubb, Safeguard, Secuguard, Yale and Diplomat. “We have safes for every need” says director Roger Barriball “and what we don’t have room to stock, we have listed on our website” From as little as $159.00 you can buy a quality safe to store valuables in your home or office. They also stock specific safes for securing pistols, or documents, or photographs and media. “We also have a small range of second-hand safes” says director Richard Nind “and if you have a safe you want to get rid of, give us a call, we may be able to

buy it off you or sell it on your behalf”. Safes not only secure valuables and money, and currently there is a big demand for ‘key safes’ also known as ‘lock boxes’. These are used to secure keys onsite for access by, home care, emergency services, friends & neighbours, and builders, especially with all the current rebuild work. If you have a commercial safe with a dial combination lock and find this slow and awkward to use, Access Lock Specialists can upgrade you to an electronic digital keypad lock, which makes locking and unlocking quick and easy. Access Lock Specialists staff are highly trained to service and open safes and keep up with the latest service information and training. • You can view their safes at 170 Waterloo Road, Hornby or online at www.accesslocks.co.nz

he people who write advertising slogans are clever with words. They can make a simple frozen chicken hugely appealing. A clever wordsmith named Ed McCabe was paid a substantial fee to write these ten words. “It takes a strong man to make a tender chicken.” This slogan for Perdue Chickens helped sell 15 million frozen chickens through American supermarkets in one year. Yes, the chickens were top quality meat. But the Perdue export department got it wrong. They translated the slogan into Spanish as “It takes an aroused man to make a chicken affectionate”. Hispanic and Mexican cooks were not amused. Three points to ponder. • Clever writers can earn substantial fees. • Translating English into other languages has traps for the unwary. • Proofreaders who understand two languages are valuable people in exporting, document translating and book publishing. “We show all our writing students how to get their articles, stories, poems or instruction books published,” says Brian Morris, Principal

at New Zealand Institute of Business Studies. “They also get thoroughly proofread before being released.” Readers who are interested in writing or proofreading work at home should call 0800 801 994 and ask for the free report #805 When You Have A Passion For Story Telling. Whether your topic is food, electronics, cars, cooking, gardening, sport or business, there is satisfaction in getting your book written and published.

earn about ‘Antarctic Exploration in the Heroic Age’ at the Workers’ Educational Association (WEA), this term. This two-week course on Saturday morning introduces early Antarctic exploration and its link to New Zealand. “Pressing scientific questions demanded collaboration between different countries,” says course tutor Dr Ursula Rack. “Of greater public interest, however, was the touch of adventure. World War I brought Antarctic science to a halt, with the exception of the epic Endurance expedition, led by Ernest Shackleton, in which a New Zealand captain played a crucial part.” ‘Antarctic Exploration in the Heroic Age’ is one of several Saturday seminars at the WEA in October-November. Everyone is welcome to attend the courses, seminars and activity groups at the WEA which has been offering adult education in the city since 1915. The full list of courses on offer in October-November can be seen in our programme. ‘Ireland in the 21st Century’ is a Saturday afternoon seminar which critically examines the northern ‘settlement’, the southern economy and likely outcomes over the next decade. “The 21st century began with, officially at least, a great deal of promise,” says course tutor Dr Philip Ferguson. “Thirty years of armed conflict in the north came to an apparent end and the south of Ireland appeared to be entering a period of dynamic economic growth. By the end of the first decade of the century, however, things were less bright.” Two further Saturday afternoon seminars look at recent history in Iraq, post 2003, and

ItalianStyleCuisine A fresh new menu makes Little Italy Restaurant in Bishopdale a must to visit. Occupying the front section of Farringtons Tavern, Little Italy Italian restaurant is a casual and charming eatery where you can relax and sample the best of Italian cuisine without travelling to Europe! First impression when you enter the restaurant is that you've walked into a Mediterranean café. It possesses a European rustic charm with gingham table clothes and picture windows complete with planted window boxes that look out on Italian landscapes. "Our new menu has an excellent range of delicious meals to suit everyone as well as a kiddies menu and a takeaway Pizza menu," said Mark Pearce, co-owner. Included on the menu is a huge selection of the expected traditional pasta and pizza dishes through to some interesting Italian flavour-infused mains. "Our Pork Belly Parmigiana Stack looks spectacular and is delicious. We slow cook the Pork Belly overnight making it so tender that it melts in your mouth. The pork is then served on a Buttery Mash with warm crisped Cabbage, Apple and Parsnip Puree, and finished with a Chunky Napoli Sauce and Mozzarella, "

FARRINGTONS TAVERN & LITTLE ITALY RESTAURANT is located at 119 Farrington Ave, Bishopdale. Phone 359 2930. Little Italy Restaurant is open daily from 11.30am to 9.30pm with no surcharge fee on Public Holidays. For more info go to www.littleitaly.co.nz or find them on facebook.

Treat the Kids!

said Mark. Another stand out main is their Pistachio Fettuccine - Pan seared Chicken is cooked in a white wine and cream sauce, tossed with a Pistachio Nut/Baby Spinach/Feta Pesto, and finished with fresh Parmesan. "Another spectacular looking dish is our Portobello Stack entree". Portobello Mushrooms are stuffed with Basil Pesto and Parmesan Cheese and finished with a roast Capsicum sauce. Little Italy is part of Farringtons Tavern and is open daily from 11.30am. With it's Italian concept theming, Little Italy is an ideal venue for private functions. It can comfortably accommodate parties of up to 70 people with catering to suit any budget and offers the perfect choice for your end of year work party. Mark and the team are happy to discuss options on 359 2930.
